How Much Does Altitude Affect Golf Distance?
Altitude affects your golf club distances by approximately 1.1% to 1.2% per 1,000 feet of elevation gain. At 5,000ft above your home course, expect 5-6% longer distances. At extreme elevations like Colorado mountain courses (8,000ft+), distances can increase 10% or more (depending on temperature). The reason is that thinner air creates less drag on the golf ball, allowing it to fly farther.
How to Adjust Golf Yardage for Altitude
To adjust your golf yardages for altitude, you can use the following formula: multiply the elevation difference (in feet) by 0.00116 to get your percentage adjustment. For example, travelling from 1,000ft to 6,000ft elevation gives you a 5,000ft difference Γ 0.00116 = 5.8% longer distances. This means your 150-yard club will play like a 159-yard shot. Always base calculations on elevation difference, not absolute altitude, and remember the effect works both waysβgoing to lower elevations means shorter distances.

How Does This Golf Distance Altitude Calculator Work?
This golf distance altitude calculator is built using the formula shared by Titliest in this blog post. We used this calculation to provide adapted yardages between your home club and the destination course, and built in a metric/imperial converter for good measure.
