Extra tips on how to use this SG Putting calculator
Your total SG putting will give you a great insight on your putting performance vs the PGA. Use this as an overall benchmark for your putting performance.
Next, check out your strokes gained putting by distance. This tells you where your strengths and weaknesses are and where to focus your practice time.
The number of putts you hit within each distance is also useful. Look for distances where you hit a lot of putts, these are well worth spending time in your practice, as a small improvement in performance will be multiplied by every putt you hit from within this range.
How DO you calculate strokes gained putting?
The first step is to find the average number of shots taken to finish the hole on the PGA Tour. We used Mark Broadie’s original paper to gather data, then interpolated the data to create a more sensitive benchmarking dataset. The calculation is then quite simple:
SG Putting = Avg shots taken from start location – Avg shots taken from end location – 1 shot
This is calculated for each putt and summed to create the total putting SG. All your putts are then filtered by start distance to produce a putting strokes gained by distance chart.
